Oldest Log Cabin – No Railing!

According to this page, this picture is of the oldest extant wooden structure in the Western Hemisphere. Pretty cool! No nails were used in this building, it’s pure woodwork! I wonder what kind of wood the logs and gable end siding is. No porch railing on this one but it’s still super-cool.

Round Log Home

A final pic of the round log home from before shows the front entrance. I’m glad that the architect used some natural rounds to create a sort-of guard rail for the front pergola. I love the massing of this home from this angle with the flagstone walkway and blue spruce trees in front. Nice Work

Here’s another shot of the log and timber house with the curved roof from before. The stair railing on this home, and this stairs in general, take way some of the appeal of the curvilinear architecture and impose too many strong horizontal lines on the overall composition. But the round rubble stone chimney is super-cool!

Here is a very cool curved log roof. It looks like an excellent get together spot. The flowers add nice touch. The only thing that is missing is some mountain laurel railings which I believe would complete the scene.

Best Deck Railing

This is one of the best looking deck railings that I’ve ever seen. This home is just awesome. Big logs holding up a second story roof over the deck create a grand scale. Umbrellas and tables to sit at and relax.

Seriously!? a post about boring deck railing. Well, we see it everywhere so might as well call a spade, a spade. This is the standard handrail seen on just about every house in America. It’s made with pressure treated lumber and has the visual aesthetic of a jail cell. Nothing like looking through some vertical bars to relax… So here it is: boring deck railing.

This is a cool banister for a public stairs. The angle and rise of the banister changes with each step and kind of looks like the stairs. This is a neat look that seems like it would be easier to hold onto while a person climbs or descends the stairs.

This is the place to be when winter comes! Relax on the veranda at one of these stilt houses on the beach. This would be an awesome place to fall asleep with the sound of the waves and ocean all around! It would also be a nice spot for some water sports and recreation.
